Laser Surgery

Dr. Burton-Hall, VMD performing surgery with the surgical laser
Green Valley is one of the few practices in the area with a carbon dioxide (CO2) surgical laser. Surgical lasers work by emitting a beam of light on the tissue that draws all the water out of the tissue and vaporizes it. There are a number of advantages to your pet when the veterinary surgeon uses a laser as opposed to the traditional scalpel.

Your pet will bleed less during the surgery. As lasers vaporize tissue, they seal blood vessels. This also allows the surgeon to better view the surgical area because less blood is blocking his/her view.

Your pet will feel less pain. As lasers vaporize, they also seal nerve endings and stop pain at the sight of the incision. It is very common for surgical laser patients to be more comfortable after surgery than patients who have been cut with a scalpel blade.

Infections are minimized with surgical lasers. As tissue is vaporized, the surgical incision is sanitized. When surgical lasers are used, bacteria on the skin are less likely to colonize within the surgical incision and cause infection. Keep in mind that Green Valley uses pressure and heat sterilized instruments for all of our surgical procedures as well as sterile preparation of surgical sites. These are all considered best practices in preventing infection.

We are very proud to offer surgical laser as one of our services. Please ask about the laser when you come to visit. We would love to talk with you if your pet needs to undergo a recommended surgical procedure.
