Lucy Bella & Luna Pearl

Luna Pearl, the deliverer of tranquility-in loving memory💕

Lucy Bella’s little sister, Luna Pearl, followed in her big sister’s paw steps and officially became a trained, tested, and certified therapy dog this year—and she was already making a big difference.

Luna frequently visited a local hospital where she spread love and quite literally helped lower blood pressure everywhere she went. She gently meandered through the lobby collecting hugs and kisses, then made her way to the outpatient waiting room, the emergency department, and the second-floor patient rooms. Patients adored her visits, and staff eagerly looked forward to the calm and joy she brought to their day. You can only imagine the joy we got to experience when they come in for a visit.

Golden Retrievers were originally bred to retrieve waterfowl without harming them and are known for their ability to carry fragile items gently. Holding an object—often a stuffed animal—acts as a calming mechanism, helping manage excitement or anxiety. When a Golden grabs something to hold, it’s an expression of joy, connection, and purpose for this intelligent working breed. Luna’s favorite toy was a pink stuffed elephant, and now we can clearly see why she transfered that inborn instinct to the people she met.

While big sister Lucy Bella is energetic, tail-wagging nonstop, and radiating happiness from every ounce of her body, Luna brought a different kind of magic. She was chill, laid back, and soothing—offering calm, comfort, and peace. Luna loved to snuggle and sit on your feet, as if to say, “I want to be close to you… don’t go anywhere just yet.”

When she was not working, Luna enjoyed her ball, spending time with her big sister Lucy Bella, car rides with Mom, soaking up the sun, keeping an eye out for the UPS man (the official treat delivery service), following Mom around the house, her pink elephant, and—of course—doing her therapy dog work.

On behalf of everyone at Green Valley Veterinary Hospital, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy on the passing of Luna Pearl. It was evident how deeply she was loved, and that love gave her a life filled with meaning and warmth. Even though her time was far too short, she touched many hearts and leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion that will continue to make a difference in the lives of others.
Luna Pearl was truly special, and she will be remembered with great affection. She will be deeply missed.

Featuring Lucy Bella, the keen listener

Lucy isn’t just any Golden Retriever—she has a gift.  While other dogs chase sticks or bark at squirrels, Lucy has the uncanny ability to get people of all ages to talk and interact with her.  Don’t get us wrong, Lucy loves to go for runs.  Once catching a bird in mid-air.  Guess that’s the bird dog in her!  She loves peanut butter and her little sister, Luna Pearl.  Lucy’s favorite thing in the whole wide world is her frisbee.  If she’s not catching it, she’s carrying it around in her mouth.  Another unique trait of the Golden Retriever.

Lucy is not a rookie when it comes to being a therapy dog.  She has done therapy work in hospitals, retirement homes, and bookstores.  Lucy wears a red bandana with a patch that reads “Therapy Dogs International Paws Awhile for Love”, but it might as well have said, “Tell me a story for I am a good listener”.  People’s eyes light up when they see Lucy, tail wagging, tongue lolling out in a wonderful grin.
Sometimes it’s difficult to get a child to read to an adult, other children or even to themselves, but Lucy brings out the best.  At the Tail Waggin’ Tutors in the Cranberry Library her gentle nature and ability to soothe and calm people make her an amazing listener and warm receptor of hugs and kisses.   The children cannot wait to read to her and show her pictures.  For we can say so much without saying a word.

Lucy also visits patients and staff at Passavant North Hills, Cancer Center, Rehabilitation floors, and Zelienople Retirement Home.  She easily makes new friends and helps reduce stress, anxiety and blood pressure. We think Lucy covers a lot of ground.

Our mission at Green Valley Veterinary Hospital is to constantly challenge ourselves to improve the standards of veterinary medicine and client service through our focus on education, teamwork, compassion and celebrating the human-animal bond helping owners to be the true heroes that their pets already believe them to be.

Imagine seeing a dog donned in a cape, or bandana in this case, running through a bustling hospital or library, eyes locked on to someone in need of help.  This dog showing compassion, loyalty, and selflessness, embodying the true spirit of a four-legged HERO.  Well then, you just met Lucy!
