Class IV Laser Therapy
What is Laser Therapy?
Laser Therapy is the use of modulated infrared rays to create changes on a cellular level. These changes result in improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling. Laser therapy has been used extensively in the United States since FDA clearance in 2002.
How Does Laser Therapy Work?
Laser light stimulates the "battery pack" of cells, called mitochondria. The mitochondria can then produce more ATP (energy), which helps cells do more work. Cells can then get rid of biologic waste products more quickly and efficiently. They can also reproduce faster, resulting in faster healing.
During each painless treatment laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to damaged areas. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain.
Would my pet benefit from Laser Therapy?
Any disease process that is painful or itchy can potentially benefit from Laser Therapy including:
Skin/Ear Problems: i.e., Hot Spots, Lick Granulomas, Ear Infections
Joint/Back Pain: i.e., Arthritis, Hip/Elbow Dysplasia, Sprains, Ligament/Muscle injuries, Slipped Discs
Wounds/Traumatic Injuries: i.e., Broken Bones, Puncture Wounds, Abscesses, Burns
Post-operative Patients: i.e., Surgical incisions to aid in healing and reduce pain
Variety of other conditions including (but not limited to): Bladder Disease, Gingivitis, Chronic Sneezing, and Stomatitis
What should I Expect with Laser Therapy?
The Laser Therapy sessions are non-invasive and not at all painful. Most patients do not need to have any fur clipped and although patients have to remain fairly still for the treatments sedation is not necessary. Most patients have little or no sensation during the treatment. Occasionally the patient feels a mild, soothing warmth or tingling sensation. Treatment times vary in length but most sites require 3-8 minutes.
For long term conditions improvement maybe seen after the first visit but often several treatments are needed to achieve the greatest benefit as Laser Therapy effects are cumulative in nature.
